If you want to become successful in life, in business in any area of your life one thing is certain. You must become resourceful and stop depending on resources.

A common trade of successful people is that they never quit and they don’t let lack of something stop them, whether that being funds, an email list, a well-visited blog or whatever.

If you don’t have something you either create it – or you go get it. Period! That’s how you succeed and in order to either create it or to go get you must become resourceful.

Did you ever go to the bathroom to do your ‘big business’ and once you were done you saw there was no toilet paper?

Ever happened to you?

I sincerely hope not, but I’m confident you can image yourself in such a pitiful situation, right?

What would you do? You are out of toilet paper, meaning you do not have your ideal resource. Did you give up? Still sitting on the toilet? Are you reading this from the toilet?

No! You got resourceful. And if you haven’t been in the situation you can image yourself in this situation and right away your mind would come up with an alternative solution to your problem.

You see, your mind is being resourceful in this scenario to resolve the problem and come up with a solution. It’s not the best solution, but it’s a short-term solution giving you the capability to move on acquire your preferred long-term solution (a ton of toilet paper so you don’t run out ever again)

Are you resourceful when it comes to your business? Do you procrastinate even when you actually know what to do to grow your business? Is it because it’s a little painful to engage in your short-term solution?

Whatever resource you think you need to become successful – you don’t! You already have everything you need to get from where you are right now to the next stage in your business.

Obviously you should go get ‘toilet paper’ for your business when you are capable of doing so, but until then, are you stuck on the toilet or are you getting up and going?

I don’t think I need to explain how my example relates to your business, you’re smart and resourceful, you already know that you could find a solution to your current most pressing business problem if you really wanted to – without buying the latest greatest tactic or fancy system.

Eventually you might have it all, know all the tactics, have all the systems at your disposal just because it makes the journey a lot faster and more enjoyable, but right now you just have to find a short-term alternative.

Ask better questions and your mind will start to look for solutions; it might not be the best solution to your situation, perhaps just a short-term solution. But at least it’s a solution. A temporary fix for your current problem, giving you the ability to move forward and acquire or create a more reliable long term solution.

Be open-minded – don’t let your lack of an ideal solution stop you from moving forward. You will eventually have whatever it is you are seeking, if you are willing to do what it takes to get there.

When you are being resourceful instead of collecting resources you are leveraging your most powerful tool in your toolkit.

Your brain!

I know you have one, and I know you are a smart person. I don’t care about the letters before or after your name, I don’t care what or whether you have a formal education. Having an education doesn’t mean you are resourceful. Using your brain and becoming resourceful is something everybody is capable of and it’s always possible to improve your ‘resourceful-muscle’.

Have you ever read the best selling book by Napoleon Hill; “Think & Grow Rich”? Did you also know that this book project was initiated by the, at the time, most successful business man, Andrew Carnige.

Andrew Carnige hired Napoleon Hill to hang around with some of the wealthiest and most successful people in the world. Napoleon Hill’s task was simple, he was asked to hang out with these people and find some commonalities. Some common trades the wealthiest and most successful people have. Hang out with these people, talk to them and listen closely.

After 20 years Napoleon Hill came up with 13 commonalities and wrote a book called ‘Think & Grow Rich’, I highly recommend you get a copy of this book the next time visit your favorite bookstore. It’s a must read!

In this article I want to briefly talk about five of the 13 commonalities.

The 5 principles’ listed below are just some of the commonalities (doh… of course, I mean I just told you there was 13 in total). Okay here we go:

1. Gain Specialized Knowledge

Now when I grew up I always knew that I wanted to make a lot of money, not ridiculous amounts of money but just enough to be able to provide for my family and myself, and not have money being an issue. Being able to do fun stuff and not have to worry about how the bills are going to get paid.

I went to college, I took a bachelor degree and I still didn’t feel that I was done walking the “normal” educational ladder so I studied a MSc. All in all this is maaany years of traditional knowledge learning. But it didn’t help me one bit when I first attempted to grow a business online.

Specialized knowledge is not what you get from college or the university. To grow a business from your kitchen table you need some very special knowledge and it wasn’t until I found some mentors and bought tons of training courses, audios, DVDs about doing what I was trying to accomplish.

I got specialized knowledge in direct response marketing, in marketing in general, in different tactics online and specialized knowledge in the online marketing field.

2. Take Fast Action

The most successful people all take fast action when they spot an opportunity. Especially if they see an opportunity were they can gain specialized knowledge. You have to be able to take fast action, being able to make a swift decision. Being able to say YES when you see a great opportunity and trust your gut feeling and your little inner voice.

3. Are Fast Implementers

The wealthiest people gain specialized knowledge, they take fast action and they implement quickly. If you’re not an implementer, you’re most likely not going to succeed if you are not able to implement and more importantly being a fast implementer.

You can spend thousands of dollars on training programs and coaching from extreme competent mentors, however, if you are not going to take fast action and implement you will accomplish nothing with that knowledge.

4. Mastermind Principle

Zig Ziglar has a saying: ”If you hang around with 9 broke people, you are bound to be the 10th”

Who do you hang out with?

Can you pick up the phone right now and call an entrepreneur who’s a millionaire to ask for advice? Can you call someone who has done what you are attempting to do? Someone successful in the home based business industry?

Are you surrounding yourself with likeminded people that will support you in your dreams, aspirations and goals?

I’ve always invested in myself and you must always invest in yourself. When I was done walking the traditional educational ladder and done with the university-life, I bought coaching and mentoring from successful people.

95% of the population will not support you, they will not understand you. Only 5% of the population has the entrepreneurial spirit as you and I have. Make sure to hang around with likeminded people and get support when times get rough.

5. Find a mentor

There is a proverb that goes something like this: “No matter how far you have gone down the wrong road, turn back”

Getting a mentor is most likely the fastest way to get off the wrong road and help you locate the right road that will lead you to your desired destination.

Every successful business owner has a mentor, everybody! I guarantee you that who ever you learn from, they are learning from someone and most likely more than just one. Always have mentors and always keep learning.

Now these are just 5 of the 13 commonalities, I highly recommend you read the book and check out all 13. If you were to rate yourself on a scale from 1-10 on the 5 commonalities just described, how would you do?

So, have the confidence in yourself and stop exhausting yourself by running around person to person begging for riches, and then wondering why nobody is dropping a penny in your cup (Hint: It’s because you’re running away too fast for them before they can even reach for their wallets).

Just think of your desires and leave it out there, go away, and trust that your cup will be filled with gold coins (or whatever it is you asked for) when the time is right.

2. Be Patient With Yourself

Receiving takes time.

Sadly, many people give up just a couple of steps before the finish line because they’ve decided that if it’s not working by now, it’s never going to work at all. Worse still are those who throw in more and more energy because they think that with more resources, the results will come faster.

This is like expecting 9 mothers to conceive and deliver a baby in 1 month. You also can’t bake cookies in half the time by doubling the temperature. You’ll incinerate those cookies to ashes!
In simple terms: Everything in this world has a natural development time, and this fact will not change no matter what resources you throw at it.

So relax and be patient. Remember that you too, as part of the universe, are also governed by the laws of the universe, and you cannot change the natural development time.

If you remember this, you will less likely work yourself up into frustration, or worse, push yourself into a downward spiral of negativity.

3. Support and Educate Yourself

Like the child who is learning how to walk, you need support. You also need to guidance on how to do it, and also the role models to look up to.

Many people give up because they think that “The Secret” is the “be all and end all” solution. Well, it’s NOT. “The Secret” is just a small portion. It was never intended, and has never been, the whole answer.

Coming to the conclusion that the Law of Attraction doesn’t work when all you ever did to educate yourself was watch “The Secret” 19 times (without looking at changing the habits of other areas of your life) is like coming to the conclusion that exercising is not an effective way to lose weight because all you did is run on the treadmill for 2 hours a day (but you’re still stuffing yourself with fried foods and cheesecakes).

So seek and be hungry for new knowledge. Also, make an effort to be amongst people or communities where you can support each other, learn from each other and also share new knowledge that you have found.

You know about the law of attraction, right? You most likely also know about the book ’The Secret’ and the movie by the same title? The one where you learn about how you should have good intentions and want more from your life and think positively and the universe will start to work in your favor and bring you whatever you wish for. If you wish you become successful with your home based business, you have to take massive focused action in order to justify for the universe that you should indeed succeed.

You should also save your energy and not just take action, just to take action. What I mean is that you shouldn’t keep doing stuff that does not work for you – you must take calculated action, action that pays, action that works. But most importantly you must take action for you to get what you wish for.

The anti-secret secret is a new and better way for you to view the world. Instead of  “Wish and you shall receive” let’s change it a little so it actually does help you accomplish your goals. Here is the new phrase you should plan you activities around:

“Give and you shall receive”

Have you ever heard that what you put out is what you get back in. Or that you get 10 times what you give. Or you reap what you sow. In order to achieve your desired level of success you must take action and you have to get a giving mindset.
